Israel Bioacoustics Conference, 11-12 October 2026 - New dates!
Bioacoustics is an interdisciplinary science that studies how animals produce, transmit, and receive sound, revealing key aspects of their behavior, ecology, communication, and the impacts of human-made noise. In Israel, situated on a critical global bird migration corridor and bordered by the Mediterranean and Red Seas, researchers use autonomous recording units and advanced analysis to study rich and diverse soundscapes, from bat ultrasounds in deserts and caves to bird migration and the deep-sea vocalizations of whales and dolphins. A major focus is also quantifying and understanding the ecological effects of urban and maritime noise. The Israeli Bioacoustics Conference brings together scientists, conservationists, and policymakers to share findings, foster collaboration, and translate acoustic data into informed, effective conservation action.

The organizing committee
The conference is organized by a group of researchers from the university of Haifa, studying aspects of animal bioacoustics:
- Efrat Toren is a PhD student in the Animal Flight lab at the Department of Evolutionary and Environmental Biology at the University of Haifa, studying bird diversity in human-influenced habitats using passive acoustic monitoring.
- Aya Marck is a PhD student at the animal flight lab at the Department of Evolutionary and Environmental Biology at the University of Haifa. She study nocturnal bird migration in Israel using bioacoustics data.
- Yaly Mevorach is a PhD student in the Department of Marine Biology and a project leader at the Morris Kahn Marine Research Station, studying cetacean social communication as part of Project CETI and leading passive acoustic monitoring of deep-diving cetaceans in Israel.
- Prof. Nir Sapir is the head of the Animal Flight lab at the Department of Evolutionary and Environmental Biology at the University of Haifa, working on aeroecology, animal migration and conservation of birds.
